Proprietor's Journal Vol. I Family Behind the Flowers

Written by Savington & Hill Floral Co., Ltd.

Some family histories are written in books. Ours has been written in flowers.  For six generations, my family has been connected to the floral trade—not simply as sellers of flowers, but as growers, designers, and custodians of a craft that has always required both knowledge and an appreciation for beauty.  The photographs in our inaugural Proprietor's Journal on Instagram and Facebook which accompany this entry offer a glimpse into that earlier world: the greenhouses, the workrooms, and the people whose hands and talents helped shape our family’s place in the floral industry. These are more than old photographs. They are a record of a way of life, and of the dedication that went into creating something beautiful for others.

Long before elaborate floral arrangements arrived in our clients' homes, there was the work behind them. There were plants to grow, flowers to tend, orders to prepare, and arrangements to design. There was an understanding that flowers were not merely a commodity, but an expression of sentiment, hospitality, celebration, and remembrance.

Over the generations, our family’s involvement in the business grew to encompass wholesale operations, retail flower shops, and garden centers. Each chapter brought its own challenges and opportunities, but the essential character of the work remained: a respect for the materials, an eye for design, and a commitment to serving people well.

That tradition continues today at Savington & Hill Floral Co. While the world around us has changed considerably, we remain devoted to the enduring pleasures of flowers, gracious living, and the personal service that distinguishes a true traditional florist.  We have seen many in the industry drift from what we knew to be an integral part of the community, the full service florist- not someone designing in their garage or preparing a bride's wedding in some non-descript warehouse.

Today, the next generation carries that heritage forward, bringing its own perspective and sensibility to a craft shaped by those who came before.  I have always believed that a family legacy is not preserved simply by looking backward. It is preserved by continuing the work, honoring the standards that preceded us, and finding ways to make those traditions meaningful in the present.

These photographs remind us where we began. They also remind us that behind every arrangement is a story—of skill, of family, and of a love for flowers that has endured across generations.

It is a privilege to carry that story forward.
